Award-winning photographer Camille Seaman leads the Kazakh Migrations photo workshop. An interview with Camille can be seen here.
We set off overland from Urumqi in the far north-west of China to venture into a little known area to the north. We stop at the Five Coloured Bay en-route with its magnificent desert scenery.
The real target lies north of the town of Fuyun. Keketuohai is a focal point for Kazakh families returning from their summer pastures up in the mountains and we can expect to see several clans drive their animals down to the south over a period of several days. The timing is never quite the same but our local contacts will do their best to ensure we are in position when the actions starts.
During quieter periods we will visit other natural attractions nearby. The Irtysh Grand Canyon is spectacular at any time, though at its best in the fall with Autumnal colours against clear blue skies. There are wetlands at Kekesuli that also benefit from the same hues and lighting.
We return to Urumqi from Altay by air. Onwards connections can easily be arranged by our in-country team.
Photographer Itinerary
Urumqi (1 night) – Start point
Five Coloured Bay (1 night) – Desert scenery
Fuyun (approx* 5 nights) – Kekesuli wetlands, Yileimu Lake
Kektuohai (approx* 5 nights) – Kazakh migration, Irysh Grand Canyon
Urumqi (1 night) – End point
*There is some degree of flexibility here. Fuyun is more comfortable but further away than Keketuohai. We will use whichever base fits with the migration schedule and the group’s preferences.
Camille Seaman is also leading the Irtysh River photo workshop immediately following the Kazakh Migration workshop. Discounts are available for anyone wishing to sign up for both of Camille’s workshops.
