2011 TED Fellow Camille Seaman leads the Irtysh River photo workshop. An interview with Camille can be seen here.
Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, to give it its full title, lies in China’s far west. It has a Central Asian feel to it with extensive deserts and a mix of ethnic groups that have roamed across Asia for countless generations.
Our workshop concentrates on the natural scenery, especially the local landforms known as Yadan. These prominent, wind-eroded outcrops produce striking landscapes, particularly in areas where they lie close to a river such as the Irtysh River at Wucaitan. We have allowed sufficient time to explore other sections of this attractive river where colors are vibrant and the light strong.
The second half of the workshop focuses on softer landscapes with excursions to two beautiful valleys. The first holds one of China’s most remote and mysterious lakes – Kanas. We have also included Hemu Village, a Tuwa community that some visitors have described as an idyllic paradise.
We use Urumqi as our start and end point, with flights to and from Altay to reach the Irtysh River and beyond.
