Mongolian NomadsThe nomadic herdsmen of Mongolia are notoriously unpredictable in their movements, but we head out to their summer pasture areas and use our local contacts to connect with local families and document their daily lives. This workshop is timed such that we return to the capital, Ulaan Baatar, in time for the annual Nadaam Festival - a colourful sporting extravaganza.

The Northern Silk Road – The Hexi CorridorGansu Province has for centuries been the route through which the Silk Road had to pass to connect China with Central Asia, India, and the Middle East. The topography to the north and to the south forced most travelers to traverse the Hexi Corridor on their treks in either direction. This is arid country, but quite stunningly beautiful for all that.

Kazakh MigrationsEvery Fall the Kazakh nomads of this remote corner of China move their herds down out of the mountains in anticipation of the onset of winter. This is a timeless activity: essential and frantic, yet natural and satisfying. We head to one of the key route nodes where family groups must pass on their way to lowland pastures.

Irtysh RiverXinjiang in China's far west is a land of contrasts. We focus on stark rock landforms known as Yadan which are found in the vicinity of this region's principle river, the Irtysh. We also visit the remote Kanas Lake and a community of Tuwans, an ethnic group closely related to Mongolians, in their stunningly-beautiful, forested valley.
